Artist Statement

I make drawings and paintings at the intersection of artistic and contemplative practice, using patterns to consider attention and embodiment. "Observation" functions both on the level of responding to the physical and intuitive senses and as a devotional practice. My work provides a model for shifts in attention: from the tonal fields of a piece in its entirety to the particularities of small areas of mark-making. Reading, writing, and sketchbook practice reinforce my interest in the ways lines can be arranged on a surface to convey personal and communal meaning and translate emotion, from a child’s scribbles to sacred texts.
