Jane Kang Lawrence 'Pink Up'

$0.00
NFS

Pink Up, collage & gouache on paper, 14x11", 2021.

Artist Statement

Having overcome colonization, there is a distinct sadness to the history of the Koreas. Many families have the trauma of separation of family members through war and there is a particular silence we uphold even now, years later. Having relatives separated from me in North Korea, little is known about the lost half of our lineage. My story is not uncommon for Korean Americans. I create this new body of paintings and drawings through the lens of having been born here yet maintaining close relationships with family in South Korea. It works as a visual allegory between individuals and location.

Artist Bio

Jane Kang Lawrence is a graduate Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University and SVA. Following arts residencies in Italy she continued to dovetail art making with teaching. She has taught visual arts, ceramics, and visual literacy for students in New York City for over 15 years. Jane is a recent recipient of the FLAG Arts Foundation,Teaching Excellence award. She is a founding director of Peep Space (Tarrytown, NY) and maintains a studio in New York
