Artist statement
These selected pieces from my most recent body of work “Night After Night” stem from late night hours sitting with my husband, making automatic and meditative charcoal drawings while I watch him play video games. Every night we enter virtual worlds together. He seeks relief from chronic pain and depression, and I escape from the numbing grind of homemaking and motherhood. Attempting to squeeze a studio practice and MFA classes into the crevices between my domestic duties, these daily at-home, after-bed-time drawing sessions of the game screen have become the visual language from which I have developed my recent works. While the shapes and marks are specific to my observations, the resulting imagery speaks to the complexities of being a caregiver. The works are an odd combination of frantic and contemplative, and embody the responsibility we feel as mothers and partners to relieve the suffering of those we love.
Artist bio
Megan Arné (born 1993) was raised in Gorham, Maine and now lives in Quincy, Massachusetts with her husband and 3 year old son. She lived in Utah for 10 years, where she received her BFA in Studio Art from Brigham Young University in 2018. Megan is currently attending Boston University where she is enrolled in the MFA Painting program. She is finishing out her first year of graduate school from home on maternity leave, as her second son is due to arrive any day. Coming into a rigorous MFA program as an expecting mother has had a profound impact on Megan's work, which now focuses on her experiences as both a mother and a caregiver to a chronically ill spouse, highlighting issues of compassion fatigue, empathy and unseen labor. Megan's most recent solo exhibition was at the Dore Eccles Art Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2020.
