My latest body of work is inspired by the vessel. There is, of course, a deep and long-standing relationship between the vessel the body, the feminine, and the spiritual. Mothers become vessels, literally carrying their children within them before birth. Afterward, they carry hope, responsibility, laundry and milk. Mother’s protect the seed. They anoint. They nourish. They carry joy. They pour-out, dry-up, and refill. These vessel ideas began as sketchbook experiments; drawings, paintings and collages of a variety of vessel forms and uses. The sketchbook guided the initial composition and then handmade papers and threads were intuitively arranged to create each work. The stitched lines represent my daily pouring out and refilling, weaving and bobbing through my day, while somehow holding it all together. The stitches heal and repair just as the vessels do. The forms encourage ideas of growth through plant-life, healing through cruets, and feeding through pitchers and cups.
