Artist Statement
I am a multimedia artist who uses humor to alleviate the stresses of everyday life. Through craft, performance and video art, I transform aspects of my identity as an act of resistance to the social constraints that are imposed on me. At the core of my work is an empathy for the human struggle, starting with my own. In the studio I sew, embroider, and construct objects using ordinary materials such as fabric, thread, hot glue and cardboard. The objects often take on a life of their own, and I develop narratives around them through writing and experimentation. My studio practice regularly overlaps with my role as a parent. The masking tape that my children are using in a project, for example, becomes a mask on my own face. The fusion of life and art is an ongoing process in my work, and therefore a form of therapy above all else.
