My recent crochet work explores the anxieties of motherhood and how the repetitive nature of stitching grounds me in the present, while allowing space for the past to interject itself into my consciousness. In using the breast/flower as subject, I am reflecting on the joyful memories of nurturing my babies and the fleeting time we have with our young children. There’s a visceral element to these meditations as they bring me back to my childhood and the security of being held in the expansive embrace of my grandmother; the warmth of our sacred lineage. Crochet is symbolic to me of the lasting connection between us. I use hooks that belonged to her to create work that expands the medium past the boundaries of what she once taught me. It is in these colorful stitches where the swirling memories of childhood/motherhood entwine to become a protective force-field for love and growth.
