Bonnie Paisley, "Pink Bathroom Pt.1"
Stop Motion Animation, 2min 42sec. 2021.
Artist Statement
My inspiration comes from the feminine domestic sphere. I often explore the intersection of craft and fine art, as well as the terrain between painting and sculpture. Using a wide range of materials that have included found, natural, and man-made objects, insulation, spray paint, caulking, royal icing, discarded furniture, dishes, fabric, as well as more traditional painting mediums, I seek to crystalize memories and experiences as evidence of our existence, our connection to others and our connections to place. My work takes the form of literal confections, large scale wall collages, as well as newer stop motion animation videos. I approach my work much like a chef in the kitchen, combining, mixing, tossing, rearranging, and finally serving my creations.
Artist Bio
Bonnie Paisley lives and works in Portland, OR. She holds a BFA from RISD and an MFA from Portland State University. She is a mother (to a now 10 year old girl), a teacher, and a feminist business practitioner who runs a community studio that offers fine art instruction, affordable studio space for womxn artists, and an artist in residence project space. While painting informs most of her work, she recently began experimenting with stop motion animation. This video was inspired by the feeling of being trapped at home and recreates the artist's actual bathroom and a fantasy/nightmare about her body turning into a frosted cake. The soundtrack was created by her friend and artist/mother collaborator, Sarah Luella Baker.
