Artist statement
I dream of puffy clouds, dreamy landscapes, and kaleidoscope skies super-enhanced with the use of an herbal nightcap. I have always embraced a deep connection with the natural world through my work. That connection is rooted deep into my subconscious where my imagination refabricates nature. My dreamworld is a complex network of emotions, memories and passions that preserve the natural world the way I enjoy seeing it. My art communicates and captures the freedom inherent in nature, recognizes lost and disappearing landscapes, and warns of a future in which nature can no longer heal itself. “Nature’s Medicine” soft sculpture collection is delicately detailed, hand-dyed, upcycled fabric modeled after traditional medicinal plants, fungus and botanicals. The fused plastic “clouds” and “jellyfish” that hang from wire or float across pools in my installation works are both elegant and melancholy. The installations represent the silent beauty of clouds and sea animals as a connection between the overuse of plastics and declining life in the world’s oceans. My textile wall landscapes are created from hand-dyed, recycled, cut, sewn and stuffed fabric. The depth-manipulation in these pieces is inspired by sculptural relief art, lucid puffy dreams and fading environments that cannot heal themselves.
Artist bio
Alissa Alfonso creates beautiful objects that repurpose the past in order to speak to the future. There is a part of my adult life that my focus was caring for and nurturing little humans. I took that roll very seriously and shifted my art making to things that comes along with motherhood. The child rearing period of my life lead me to experiment with mediums I probably would not of worked with, in fact I feel my art practice would not of been focused on textiles or repurposed if it wasn’t for my children. My sustainable art practice centers around awareness and leaving the world a better place for future generations, and those generations are my children. In fact, my school aged kids gave me the opportunity to spread my art practice through a program I created for their school called "Off the Canvas". The program focuses on exposing children to non-traditional arts, crafts, and mediums using recycled and repurposed materials. I am currently working on soft-sculpting parts for a new functional lighting collection as well as experimenting melting glass vessels.
