Raina Briggs "Balanchine's Motel 6"
oil on canvas/28” x 45”/2021/ $2,200
Artist Statement
My paintings explore the role our personal experiences play in obscuring reality. I’m captivated by things that at face value seem mundane, but hold power and intimacy. The act of making the painting carries the burden of the search for closure, rooted in emotional response. The accumulation of layers reveals a conclusive feeling that is familiar to the viewer. In my work I focus on the ways we navigate the world because I am fascinated by distortion and perception. I feel like the mundane becomes forgotten in that phenomena, because no one intends to memorialize the ordinary. I want to communicate the complexity of everyday life, and the ways in which we rationalize and negotiate it.
