Artist Statement

This series of sculptures are addressing the shared experience of growing up in the suburbs that form a ring around the core of every city. It seems like an impossible commonality- so many of us specifically reject these places, we move at the first opportunity. People flee these supposed cultural dead-zones, describing them as uniform, uninteresting, or worse. This seems unfair, the cultures exist. These are diverse places, with nuanced lives being led, in independent and semi-permeable bubbles. It’s a culture based on space and private moments These sculptures are meant to be gentle, soft, and sincere. These were gentle, soft, and sincere places, repeating patterns of park, yard, daycares, and libraries. They can also be reminders of dark and lonely moments, because these can also be dark and lonely places.
