Artist Statement
In the series “Artisanal” - titled after the phrase used to distinguish consumer products by smaller brands from their large corporate competitors, aluminum from craft beer cans is used in combination with papers, fabrics wire and paint to create colorful abstractions from Nature. I am very interested in this relationship and distinction between hobby, professionalism, masculine and feminine, playing between painting and sculpture, fine art and craft. The craft beer industry is largely associated with male leisure activity of which is using the language of “craft” to distinguish and elevate it’s product rather than to devalue. The works incorporate elements of hand stitching, weaving, painting, collage, and created while at an “artists retreat” - a space that has been dedicated for artists to rejuvenate, rest, create, think, follow their intuition as to what they needed, be that anything from leisurely gardening to creating in the studio. No creative output was expected, although this laid-back space prompted one of the most productive in my career.
