Artist Statement

Resting Spiral responds to the forced rest of the 2020 pandemic. Survival snapped from being out there “on the grind” to staying home with no guarantee of anything. I found myself with this odd task of rest, ruminate, repeat. This time of restful rumination allowed me to create a path of resistance to oppressive systems through community and gardening. Resisting capitalism by gardening, reusing material, and resting. I approach craft with a queer and neurodivergent hand, looking to contemporary queer culture of self-definition and fluidity. I self-teach and use material intuitively as resistance to craftsmanship. This work is a reminder of the value of rest and rumination.

Artist Bio

After graduating in 2020 with her BFA in Ceramics from CSULB, Ashley Estabrook relocated from Long Beach to Altadena, California where she set up a home studio in effort to find stability and continue her artistic practice after graduation during the pandemic. She was born and raised in Los Angeles and draws form the sparse and often membership-based access to flora that the city has to offer. Ashley is active in her community composting group and has begun her first vegetable garden during quarantine; being an active participant in the community’s permaculture is an act of resistance to the capitalist state of America. She uses flora and fauna as protest and muse.
