BIO
Masha Morgunova is a multimedia artist born in Saint Petersburg. Masha currently resides in New York City and continues to make figurative work in a variety of media, including ceramic sculpture, oil painting, and silicone casting.
STATEMENT
I feel compelled to do project-based work, often depicting myself through self-portraits as a means to reify my relationship to the world and reflecting on themes of longing, sexuality, womanhood, and human connection. My recent project, titled Heat, is a sculptural installation that deals with the concept of “going into heat,” when a being is overcome by an intense craving for carnal intimacy. This project explores peach imagery in relation to sexuality and invites the viewer to reflect on the destructive nature of desires and the inner violence that can occur as a result of succumbing to them. Focusing on the female experiences of desire, the work explores broader topics of masochism, power imbalance, and control through manipulation and distortion of the human form.
