STATEMENT

The garden world I construct through painting, drawing and collage is a sacred place for me. As I walk across the soil, I can feel the presence of those who’ve crossed over it before me, and those who will cross over it after me. My work explores grief, environmental fragility and my rural Pennsylvania upbringing through the use of handmade earth pigments and water-based media on paper and oil painting. Moons, fish, butterflies, flowers, and Pennsylvania German Folk Art often function as otherworldly icons and motifs that accentuate the mystery and majesty of the people and places I’ve known. In doing so, I’m traversing my past, present and future by transforming images of flora and fauna into fragmented, dream-like narratives of preservation, reflection and timelessness. With each artwork I bridge the gap between nature and the soul.
