Maria Ah Hyun Stracke is an artist and educator currently based in Philadelphia, born in Pusan, South Korea and raised in Minnesota. Stracke earned a PhD in Literature and Criticism from The Graduate Center - City University of New York and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Tyler School of Art and Architecture - Temple University.

STATEMENT

Maria Stracke’s paintings employ references to Korean folk art, Buddhism and shamanism to create new symbolic landscapes and personal narratives. Stracke’s abstraction and fragmentation of forms, motifs, and materials drawn from Korean aesthetic history explore questions of displacement and belonging within a Western cultural canon.
