BIO

Ian Zipfel is a Maryland based leatherworker and painter, often melding the two mediums. He apprenticed at the Centre for Calceology and Ancient Leather in Lausanne, Switzerland and at Sartorial del Cuoio de Alessandro Stella in Siena, Italy, among others. His work has been exhibited at venues including The Watergate Gallery, Circle Gallery, Delaplaine Arts Center, and as part of a forthcoming artist talk at SHIUR International.

STATEMENT

A few years back I journeyed to the cobblestoned streets of Europe where I was taken in and taught by master leather workers in France, Switzerland, and Italy. This pilgrimage left me humbled by leather working’s long history and hungry to preserve its traditional techniques. In time I learned to harness the unique qualities of leather: its texture, plasticity, durability, and its ability to be stitched. My work brings soulfulness to this ancient medium, pushing leather beyond its normal uses for bags and boots and into the realm of storytelling. Leather sculptures and paintings tell stories and wrestle with the complexity of the people, places, and traditions I’ve known.
