BIO
Gabriel Boyd is a contemporary visual artist who lives and works in Albany New York. Gabriel is a recent graduate of Hudson Valley Community College. Gabriel works in primarily digital photography and strives to explore the contemporary black experience through the lens of myth. When asked what they would describe themselves as without using the word artist Gabriel had this to say: “...I am a fervent questioner. My goal is to sleuth the intention of things. To be a detective on an infinite foray into the unknown and to meet every question with another question.” As a sleuth of sorts, their work or rather questions are informed by the writing of Bell Hooks, Contemporary black culture, mythological imagery, and lived experience. Their eventual dream is to break the boundaries that limit the availability of artists' spaces and to be a part of inspiring other black artists to do the same.
STATEMENT
There is a miasma that obscures black lineage in this country. It is suffocating to be robbed of the catharsis of history. I as a black individual am left to assume at a certain point. I cannot see past four generations it is nothing but impenetrable mist. The horrid part lies in that I am meant to assume the worst. History class has taught me to fear what lies beyond that miasma and to rest assured that whatever my ancestors were was damning, shameful not worth history outside of vague assertions of suffering. So I thought up a history. I think it is better than to wheeze sifting through the fog. My ancestor was a botanist. I think it so and so it is true. I made them a ghast because I do not know their face all I know is that they cared for plants and they are dead.
