Mark Tambella, "Water Study"
Artiist Statement
My paintings continue along a figurative path drawn from earlier expressionistic landscape, portrait work, still life and combined painterly groupings of people working, participating in a moment; energetic, sexualized and often indecipherable. The work is about painting and drawing and attempts through it to inspire a kind of spiritual curiosity, like decoding a dream and reassembling it another day. My work is basically conceptual and relies on imagined and devised thinking rather than representation. I see painting and drawing is the medium for deliberate reflective decisions, working on multiple pieces often with different subject criteria, requiring the time in between and time away. Thinking and reflecting time. This forces a kind of meditation and structure on my otherwise unfortunate tendency to strangle the work or despair of its progress.
