Will Hutnick 'Bolt Cutters You Left Behind'

Artist Statement
My current work consists of mixed media paintings - featuring acrylic, colored pencils, crayon, ink and spray paint on canvas - that queer the landscape and our expectations (and perceptions) of space. My work begins by creating rubbings from personal, found, and/or discarded objects because of their/our relationship to the physical world, indexical nature, and allusions to topography. Some of those objects include: old milk crates from my late father’s car, heating vents in my home, the wood grain from my studio floor. The rubbings - combined with my interest in disorienting patterns, pseudo-camouflaged color relationships and self-similar forms and shapes - create environments that enable me to process, organize, and navigate moments of time, specifically my lived experiences and daily negotiations as a queer person.
Artist Bio
Will Hutnick received his M.F.A. from Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) and his B.A. from Providence College (Providence, RI). Recent exhibitions include: St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, NY, solo), Standard Space (Sharon, CT, solo), One River School (Hartsdale, NY, solo), Collar Works (Troy, NY), Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Brooklyn) and LVL3 Gallery (Chicago, IL). He has been an artist-in-residence at Yaddo (Saratoga Springs, NY), Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences (Rabun Gap, GA), Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency by Collar Works (Granville, NY), DNA Gallery (Provincetown, MA), Wassaic Project (Wassaic, NY), Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT) and Benaco Arte (Sirmione, Italy). Hutnick is a 2017 Martha Boschen Porter Fund grant recipient from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and a 2015 grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Art. He currently lives and works in Wassaic, NY, and is the Director of Artistic Programming at the Wassaic Project.
