Artist Statement

Tyna Ontko's practice combines a series of processes which expand upon the definitions of autobiography, ecology and economy. By traditional means of labor and craft, she uses natural materials to render art objects through an ecofeminist lens in an attempt to convey a sense of how the body shapes the built environment and the notions of worth within it. These processes are informed by intensive research, spiritual practice, domestic labor, and queer perspective, experiences which in turn form a blueprint for the work based in both circumstance and intent. Ultimately interested in how we use ritual to contribute to a greater dialogue of signs and symbols, Ontko’s practice embraces the potential of everyday magic to reshape narrative purpose and shift perception over time.
