Lilian Shtereva - Climax (Dry pigment, poppyseed oil, botanical matter on linen, 26" x 18", 2020)
The major concern in my work is the embrace of ruin and the profound experimentation with movement, gesture and the physical and chemical properties of pigment itself. My relationship with painting is direct and raw. I use fluids and dispersion of matter with open-ended marks, shapes and stains to analyse the connection between pigment and linen, transparency and structural support while exhibiting traces of vegetation, storms, winds and earth. I pour, sweep, brush, drip, and fling layers of paint in various directions. I coax pools of paint into translucent veils of color layering one on top of the other.
