Masha Ryskin - Blue Brush (mixed media on board, 8" x 8" x 2", 2016)
My work explores themes of a sense of place and displacement, which stems from my experience growing up in the Soviet Union and subsequently immigrating to the United States. As a result, practice is driven by the idea of memory and adaptation to one’s environment. I employ formal language to investigate the idea of finding one’s way and identity in unfamiliar settings while taking bits and pieces of my surroundings and assemble them into imaginary spaces. The works speak to the search for one’s belonging and sense of connection.
