Ryan Thayer Davis 'Scrum M'Lord'
Drawer 1- Scrum M'Lord, gouache on paper, 11" x 15", 2019
Artist Statement
I'm interested in the animism of everyday life, in forms like rocks, grasses, flowers, animals and people, and how these phenomena scale up to build hierarchies of life, intelligence, and meaning. The interrelations of these webs of meaning shout with strident color and entangled structures that are contained yet unabashedly exuberant. I am inspired by 2-dimensional line and shape; type design is a great teacher. I am interested in making deep space with flat 2D shape interactions and indulgent color clashes. I am interested in how humor can emerge from banal formal relationships.
