Artist Statement

Rachel’s work is a study of the human condition; typically in the context of the family system. As Leo Tolstoy famously opens Anna Karenina, “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” Whether the focus is on her own very personal narratives or that of another, she homes in on the overlapping threads we all experience. She observes and translates the patterns that appear from one generation to the next, the impressions that they make, their particularities, and the broad strokes that can describe us all. Beginning a work, Rachel embraces the process. She knows that while she may intend to describe a moment and the psychological and visual nuances surrounding the scene, she allows and even invites the painting to chart its own path forward. In so doing, the work often becomes an even further exploration into the depths of the human psyche.
