Julia Norton - Sunny Side (Black Walnut Ink, Cochineal, Lapis Lazuli, Egyptian Green, Turmeric Ink, and Bone Black on Handmade Paper, 9" x 12", 2020
I make paintings using color pigments from nature. Some of these I forage for myself, some I collect from around the world. The materials inform meaning within these images based on their histories, unique qualities, and from respecting their lives as plants, animals, and minerals that give to the earth. I like ghost tales, fairy tales, and stories that transport, and think hope and emotional honesty are intrinsic to self care. I explore memory, trauma, and dreams while constantly searching for imagery that is both evocative, at times referential, and unapologetically romantic and sentimental.
