Kerri Ammirata 'Untitled'
Drawer 1- untitled Mixed media on paper 12 x 12 inches 2019
Artist Statement
I create sculptural paintings that explore the complexities between the mundane and the sacred; deconstructing the iconography and ritual between Catholicism, Christianity, and American secular spiritualism. Combining both woodcarving and painting, I create my own symbolic language through the combination of grids, mapping tools, astrology, constellations, scripture, snakes, megaliths (i.e. dolmens, passage tombs), petroglyphs, and graveyards. The painted wood carved objects are collaged together where each surface is carved and shaped by hand, adding ritual and history to each piece. I try to expand on the idea of building and creating a space for energy, spiritualism, and domesticity without the weight of permanence — an altar built to no one or no god. Women for centuries have been relegated to the home, restricted from the male- determined, high-religious spaces, but in my work, I build a space I am allowed to be in.
