Jane McKenzie
Drawer 3- Sky dome with Jupiter, watercolor on paper, 12 x 9 inches, 2019
Artist Statement
My work over the last several years focuses on nocturnal observations painted each night between sunset and midnight from my backyard or apartment window. This practice has been a nightly meditative ritual in which I use paint to translate and respond to the energy in the landscape around me. There is also an interior, intuitive vision at play. A friend told me that my work seems to strive for the sky and yet be present in the moment. I am interested in this idea of painterly navigation of the near and far. This body of work has evolved into an investigation of urban backyard habitat and the vital function urban greenspaces and small backyards have in our lives and in the current climate crisis.
