Artist Bio
Francisco Donoso is a Bronx based Latinx artist. He was born in Ecuador and grew up in Miami, Florida. He's a recipient of DACA and an advocate for immigrant rights. After attending NWSA, he received his BFA from Purchase College. He's completed residencies/fellowships at NYCAMS, Wave Hill, Stony Brook University, Race Forward and The Bronx Museum. He's exhibited throughout NYC at El Museo del Barrio, E.Tay Gallery, Latchkey Gallery, John Jay College, Wave Hill, La Bodega Gallery among others, in Berlin at Emerson Gallery, and in Las Vegas at Believer Festival. He's the Associate Manager at Parsons Scholars Program, exploring the intersections of art, education social justice.
Artist Statement
I create mixed-media paintings, collages, and installations to explore the often unarticulated yet deeply felt complexities of the immigrant experience. The works become embodiments of human experience and sites where new worlds, or alter-mundos, are constructed -- and where notions of placement and fixed boundaries are questioned to reveal the precariousness of belonging. Through an intuitive process of working and layering paint, organic forms emerge that make reference to the impermanent: land, water, clouds and the celestial, becoming players in their own narratives of navigation, movement and placement. Hard edges and the chain linked fence make reference to maps, borders and the ubiquitous grid, which attempt to establish order to the amorphous. As an immigrant to the US from Ecuador, and recipient of DACA, I create work from a desire to find meaning in feelings of displacement and immobility, but also imaginative freedom and hope. I want to create a space to dialogue about the possibilities of a future where borders, imposed or self-made, don’t become limits of our potential for exchange and livelihood.
