John DeSousa - Jupiter (drywall, gift wrap, joint compound, inkjet text, prints, graphite, 8” x 13”, 2019)
"Jupiter" came out of a semester-long foray into exploring the surface and materiality of drywall. Having already had my Senior Show in April, I had a month to play with drywall and other materials in more whimsical ways before graduating. This piece was made in under 10 minutes of joy, unlike how I would agonize over some work for weeks. So, the brevity and spontaneity of creating "Jupiter" was really refreshing and grounding, which had felt foreign after such a stressful senior year. Since then, I've stepped back from drywall to explore the materiality of paper and assembling playful sculptures.
