Andrew Dines 'Scraps'
Drawer 2- Scraps, Gouache on paper. 7 ½ x 9 inches, 2020
Artist Statement
Normally, my work deals with notions of progress and power. The chaos of 2020 led me to make a number of paintings unrelated to my larger body of work. Some pieces are earnest and personal and some are defiantly frivolous. Importantly and unusually for me, all are apolitical. As an artist whose research involves following politics, I am dismayed by the current moment. The serious problems we face are ignored by those in power, and increasingly obscured by bad faith actors in media and the academy in order to promote false narratives that favor capital (and to justify their own power grabs). Ours is an Orwellian time of narrative over data, division over solidarity, and ideological purity over rational discourse. In this environment, I have found solace in the studio and a growing body of apolitical work. I have included three examples for consideration in the flat files.
