Artist Statement

Highlighting the intersections of text, image, and architecture, my work is a document of the space around me. Through printmaking, I honor the deep connection between human beings and the built environment. Each project begins with the selection of a few photographs from my database—some which I’ve taken, others which I’ve gathered from the internet. Using digital brushes, layer masks, and halftone dots, I build a sketch in Photoshop. Then, I produce a physical print with screen and ink. While the original reference photos are abstracted, it’s likely that hundreds or thousands of people have witnessed the images disguised in my prints, creating an exciting potential for recognition and shared experience.

Artist Bio

Vic Barquin (b. 1993) grew up in Cranbury, New Jersey. In 2016, she received a BFA in Printmaking with honors from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Upon graduation she received the Genevieve McMillan-Reba Stewart Traveling Fellowship which funded her residency at the Can Serrat International Art Centre in Spain. Her work has been shown throughout Chicago in exhibitions at Parlour and Ramp, Lawrence & Clark, Spudnik Press, NEIU Fine Arts Center, and on behalf of the Terrain Biennial and Purple Window Gallery’s Hello Neighbor project. She also exhibited in a two-person show at Lens Gallery in Boston. In August, Barquin will begin a Masters Program at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR.
