Artist Statement

As a seventh-generation Mormon, many faithful women came before me and many men were given power over them. I seek to understand my place in a religious legacy of female submissiveness as I examine the impact a lifetime of gendered “sacred” rituals and ecclesastical patriarchal authority can have on the female mind and body. Using collage-like compositions of mixed media such as paper marbling, spray paint, and watercolor, I draw upon familiar aspects of the natural landscape, architecture, and the human body to depict imaginary environments where questions of identity, power, and perception can freely exist.
