Transmissions
Work by Katherine Bennett

March 30-May 11, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, March 30, 2012 from 5 to 9 pm

Widening notions of habitable spaces and creating a presence across the trajectory of time, Katherine Bennett uses sound and light as visceral material to foster relationships across the intangible spaces within the mind and the liminal spaces created by digital communities.  Bennett's work studies the terrain of memory - it’s absence, degradation and the new space that this loss provides for new experiences. Her latest environments investigate the development of social networks, and experiment with interaction thresholds using sound and light facilitated by programming to create interactive and responsive installations. Transmissions will feature four installations, each representing the presence of a person, memory, or activity: The Depository: Aural Outpost, Sonic Webs, Then Ether, and Antenna Clouds.

Katherine Bennett earned her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in the Art & Technology Studies and Sound Departments. She has a BFA in Sculpture from Wolverhampton University (UK) and a BA in Psychology from Ohio University. She has won grants from The Ohio Arts Council, the Puffin Foundation, The Illuminating and Engineering Society of North America, The Applied Research Labs and Faculty Enrichment Grants from the University of the Arts. Her work has been featured in many exhibitions, including the ElectroFringe Festival (Australia), Indianapolis Arts Center, The Carnegie (Covington, KY), The Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati, Ohio) and The Eagle Works Gallery in England. She has performed as MindField Experiment’s in Juxtapostion Arena, the 404 Festival in Rosario, Argentina and, most recently, at ISEA Singapore.
