“We are still in Eden; the wall that shuts us out is our own ignorance and folly.” - Thomas Cole
The Hudson River School reawakened in artists a marveling at the beauty and mystery of the natural world.
For Cole, the river valley became a place of sacred reflection for the human soul. He rebuked industry for decimating the wonders of the landscape, and believed art could ignite environmental awareness and responsible socio-political progress.
The artists represented in Still Eden project inwardly, as Cole did, while contemplating the current cultural fixation with place. With nature as muse, each artist sets out to define our varied relationships to the natural world -- the inspiration, alteration, and regeneration of the natural element and its boundaries.
