Means of Connection
examinations by Ryan Clow and Jason van Staveren
May 2014
Artist Reception: Friday, May 30th from 5 to 9 pm
We have moved! We invite you to join us this Troy Night Out at our new location, 137 4th St Troy, NY.
Using images web-published by their subjects and video production focused on bureaucratic machinations Clow and van Staveren confront ways our social paradigm professes to create connections.
Ryan Clow
By appropriating and re-contextualizing images from web sources such as Craigslist, OKCupid, and Instagram, Clow invites a critical gaze at how personal information is reflected in an age defined by our socially imposed reliance on the Internet. Clow’s presentations of these images examine issues of privacy, the (un)intentional surrender thereof in self-publication and categorization via individual mediation.
Jason van Staveren
van Staveren uses video to re-imagine failed bureaucratic systems. Costly, seldom used public facilities and direct mail catalogs are targeted as wasteful, ineffective devices for connection. These systems are questioned via their transformation into things more playful if not necessarily more useful.
