SUSAN STUART

Over time I’ve focused on three different series: architecture, dogs, and abstraction.

Since living in downtown Albany, I have been influenced by its interesting and diverse cityscape, resulting in my architecture series. The use of space, contrasting shapes, and the linear forms of the structures have always inspired me and fostered an appreciation of construction sites.

The pieces on the south wall of this Gallery cover over forty years of work. The two works on either end are the oldest, and the five center pieces are the most recent. In the two older works I was developing my painting technique of crumbling dry pastel and pumice into wet oil paint creating a variance in texture and intensity of colors. The five most recent abstractions have been more personal as I see them centering on relationships. Often within each relationship are contrasting personalities and opposing concepts creating an attraction. In these five works, I invite you to examine your expectations and conclusions based on your perception of relationships.
