STATEMENT
Getting older is bitter-sweet.
The sweetness comes from the sugar, spending time with family, and celebrating another trip around the sun. Bitterness, the uncanny feeling of time passing. Everything that has changed since the last time I sat in front of a cake comes flooding through my brain. And then quickly the anticipation, goals, and worries of the future follow suit.
Food helps us to celebrate the important events in our life, it brings people together, can be shared, and retains cultural identity. Chocolate cake is a simpler perception of time, it's what am I doing with my life? It's deliciously selfish, it's pretending this day feels any
BIO
Ben Eden is a multi-disciplinary artist who works with painting, soft sculpture and video. Based in New York, they received their BFA from SUNY Purchase in 2021. In their paintings they use mythological archetypes to fight disillusionment by sacrificing realism and logic for the sake of joy. Their suspension of disbelief manifests in forms of pretend play and folklore. And ideas are conjured when fantasy is faced with the human condition; when imagination is confronted with love, learning, emotion, aspiration, conflict, time, and death.
Eden’s work has appeared in exhibitions at Governors Island: Flux Factory House 404, Metropolitan Pavilion, Trestle Gallery: Brooklyn NY, and the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery: SUNY Purchase. They are the recipient of the 2021 Painting and Drawing Department Award at SUNY Purchase.
