STATEMENT
As I paint, I am solving a puzzle–each image and composition is a unique challenge for me to discover new ways of applying paint and developing surfaces. My painting practice is an alchemical exploration of acrylic–pouring, stenciling, airbrushing, marbling, and stamping. Rather than rendering in a traditional sense, I think of illusion as a means of recreating objects' impressions as mimicry. In my paintings, I have been exploring the production and rituals of food. I am also questioning domesticity, interiority, the politics of home, and our relationships with food. In this way, there is a relationship between caretaking and animal relationships. History is my passion, alongside painting, and guides my thinking.
BIO
Abbi Kenny is an emerging artist and painter living and working in Boston, MA. She is an MFA candidate in painting at Boston University College of Fine Arts. She received her BFA with honors in painting and a concentration in the Theory and History of Art and Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2020. At RISD, she participated in the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. After completing her undergraduate degree, she worked in the Nicholson File Artist Studios in Providence, RI, until moving to Toronto, Canada, in August 2021, then to Boston. Abbi is a recipient of the Royal Drawing School’s Dumfries House Estate drawing residency and grant near Cumnock, Scotland (2019) and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in painting (2022). Her work has been exhibited across New England and New York.
